Get on and Shine with Holly Honeychurch

Before I went clubbing last night I read this dance therapy article about how to prepare to for a dance session. I love what it touches upon. How the body holds trauma and your past stories unravel as you dance, with stuck energy being released. An ecstatic dance sesh can be amazing therapy for the mind. Also, how you’re extremely vulnerable when you dance and that’s why it can be hard for some people because it shows people around you something about yourself and your movements. You can’t hide.

I consciously went into the space ready to explore my bodily parameters, especially as I’ve been getting fitter and more light footed recently. My body didn’t disappoint…hooray! Firstly I had no foot pain - that’s massive. Usually, all my waking thoughts go to my right foot but today they got a break and could focus more on balance exercises and hip strengthening. God bless orthotic insoles. I couldn’t do without them.

I had one session of sitting down, rather than the usual multiple chair encounters and I basically jogged on the spot (with some sense of rhythm : ), occasionally waving my arms around, for a couple of hours. Last night was all about hips - the stonger my hips are, the more capable I am of not wobbling around. So it was also a night of plies. I’ve spent my entire life with my hips internally rotating…..on nights like these, they get a chance to explore other, more normal directions. This is invaluable when navigating a packed club full of drunk people.
